Our Foundress

Mother Brigida Morello ( Foundress )

Mother Brigida Morello ( Foundress )

Blessed Brigida Morello of Jesus, the Foundress of the Congregation of the Ursulines of Mary Immaculate, was born on 10th June 1610 in the coastal town of Rapallo, Italy. Her parents, Nicolo Morello and Lavinia Borzese, were renowned for their wisdom and virtue and were highly respected by the townspeople.

Born into a deeply devout family, Brigida was raised in a prayerful and virtuous environment. She was brought up by her paternal grand-uncle and his wife, a pious couple who had no children of their own.

A mystic of the 17th century, Brigida was gifted with the grace of contemplation, prophecy, and miracles. Motivated by her love for God and neighbour, she responded to the needs of her time by founding the Congregation of the Ursulines of Mary Immaculate (UMI) in Piacenza, Italy, on 17th February 1649, with a specific mission to educate young girls.

She passed away on 3rd September 1679 at 3:00 a.m., at the age of 69. Blessed Brigida Morello was beatified on 15th March 1998 by Pope John Paul II.

UMI Education Policy

Following the example of our Foundress, Blessed Brigida of Jesus, we, the Ursulines of Mary Immaculate, view education as the integral formation of the young. We strive to impart moral values and ensure quality education that blends spiritual and human development, empowering students to live meaningful lives in a challenging world. Our educational efforts aim to shape a new generation marked by civic responsibility, a deep sense of social justice, human values, and solidarity with people of all backgrounds. A dedicated team of teachers forms the backbone of our institution. Their professional competence, commitment, compassion, and inspiring lives motivate our students to achieve excellence while upholding the UMI vision of education.

We encourage our students to discover life’s deeper meaning, to think critically and independently, to advocate for the poor, and to uphold justice and truth. Our institutions are open to all students regardless of caste or creed. They are welcomed and supported in growing within their own cultural, social, and religious traditions. As a religious minority institution, we give preference to Christians in both admissions and appointments and place a special emphasis on the faith formation of Christian youth.

Our institutions also serve the broader community by sharing their resources for lifelong learning and development. All operations, including employment policies, are guided by the regulations laid down by the authorities of the Ursulines of Mary Immaculate. To achieve this educational mission, we invite students, teachers, and collaborators to embrace our vision and wholeheartedly support us in this noble endeavour.
